Fattoria Vecchienna in Maremma Tuscany

11 May 2018

Our Fattoria (that is a farm) Vecchienna, located in Upper Maremma in Tuscany has kept its typical architecture and is a listed historical monument, member of the ADSI (Associazione delle Dimore Storiche Italiane). Spread on the property, small farms (Podere) some of which have been restored, such as the Podere San Florestano and Podere Ciclamino, to be rented for holidays.

Located in the hills, but only at 35 minutes from the sea, near Massa Marittima, Suvereto, San Vincenzo, the Fattoria Vecchienna offers extraordinary landscapes, and the sunsets are stupendous. All around , hectares of forests. Built in the middle of the 19th century, Fattoria Vecchienna includes a central building, the Villa, and several other uildings that, until the Second World War, were used for farming. Vecchienna then produced wheat and other cereals, wine, olive oil, pecorino cheese.

There were attics and barns, an oil press, a cellar to make wine, and other buildings dedicated to the activities necessary for the management of the farm: carpentry, ironwork, barns… On the doors of the various buildings of Vecchienna one can still read the name of their destination. Vecchienna's Fattoria also had a school, wash-house and tile factory. Vecchienna had been built and designed as a model farm by François de Larderel, the entrepreneur who exploited Tuscan geothermal resources to produce boric acid. On the property of several hectares a number of small farmhouses (podere) were established. A manager managed the domain.

After the Second World War, it was the rural exodus and peasants left the "Podere". As in France, agriculture in hilly areas and on unfertile land encountered more and more difficulties. The Fattoria Vecchienna, however, continues to breed free range Limousin cows, has built a photovoltaic field, and rents the recently renovated Podere San Florestano e Ciclamino to nature lovers who want to discover the beauty of this part of Tuscany.
